BLOOD ORCHID: How Women Feel
– a concert that blends songs and stories about how women feel – from the outrage of the #Me-too movement, to the joys of deep sexual bonding. From the heart break of lost love to the mystic pleasure of ancient times. Blood Orchid is a heart’s journey traced through the powers of music & story.
The Blood Orchid concert includes cover songs written by or made famous by well-known women singers such as: Edith Piaf – If you go away/Ne me quitte pas; Bonnie Raitt – I can’t make you love me; Nina Simone – Everything Must Change; Nana Mouskouri – Every Grain of Sand; Joni Mitchell – A Case of You & Both Sides Now; Eartha Kitt – I wanna be evil; Mercedes Sosa – Gracias a la vida; Rickie Lee Jones – Company and many more.
Barbara will also sing several of her own compositions in this show such as Body, Lullaby for a deep sleep, Blood Orchid, The life I dreamed, Bright woman of dark ages and other songs that she is currently writing.
Why the name, “Blood Orchid?”
Orchids have great beauty… in some cases, almost a spiritual quality. But they are also very earthy and sexually complex. Orchids are survivors – they may go back as far as 100 million years and therefore are among the oldest known flowers on the planet. Their roots can live in soil, but many take their nutrients, almost magically, from the air. Orchids are a complex blend of earth and space; beauty and subterfuge; hardiness and great fragility. At this point, there is no plant known as the Blood Orchid.
BIO – Barbara Lewis performs powerful folk and pop songs that are both entertaining and highly emotional. With her wide-range, classically-trained voice, vulnerable stage presence and elegant storytelling ability, she is known as “a hugely gifted singer, a born communicator.”
Lewis creates concerts the are based on a theme. Recent concerts have been, Passionate Heart-A celebration of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen and My Canada-Singing the Soul of a Country (a touring concert that celebrated Canada’s 150th bithday.)

About the Concert! (poster is attached)
A unique, deeply personal showcase of song…
In Blood Orchid, Barbara re-awakens and stirs the senses. Her audiences luxuriate in the memories she brings alive; the Blood of passion and the beauty of the Orchid are combined in song to tell the emotional journey of women in our lifetime.
Barbara’s voice, like the orchid, is rare and exquisite – easily one of Canada’s finest. In Blood Orchid, you’ll experience the magical union of her powerful, wide-ranging vocal abilities, with the personal connection that has forever endeared her to her fans.
In creating Blood Orchid, Barbara painstakingly searched for and assembled, for the first time, a group of popular classics that, together, reveal women’s deepest feelings and emotions. It is an uplifting tribute to women, in all states of being – the glorious and the downcast – truly, “How Women Feel.”
From Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” to Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman” – from “La Vie en Rose” (Edith Piaf) to Peggy Lee’s anthem, “Fever,” you’ll thrill to the music of generations, intimately interpreted as never before.
An exceptional performer not to be missed!
“Wow! Commanding performance by Barbara Lewis. Enthusiastic crowd in awe of tremendous range.”
